Fake News in South KC
Last week’s edition of The Jackson County Advocate had a lengthy article about the last Southern Communities Coalition meeting where Robbyn Wahby, Executive Director of the Missouri Charter Public School Commission, presented an overview of charter schools and why Hickman Mills is eligible.
Lots of background was covered in the article as were comments made by the Hickman Mills, Center, and Grandview superintendents. Interestingly, it was pointed out that Dr. Carpenter, Hickman Mills Superintendent, was the most vocal. This fact is true. Not only his comments, but his posture and facial expressions expressed opposition to what he was hearing.
What was not covered, but was reported in The Pitch, is that Carpenter’s wife is the principal at Lee A. Tolbert Community Academy, a charter school within the Kansas City Public Schools. Is support of charters a question of who’s bringing in the bucks; or is it more what’s good for the goose isn’t necessarily good for the gander? Remember, Carpenter took his kid out of the district’s early childhood program and put him in a private school. Apparently, this program, which Carpenter oversees, is good enough for all the kids in Hickman Mills but his own. Carpenter seems to get a lot of good press but maybe that depends on which side of his mouth he’s talking out of.
